FAQ
Gravity casting is an authentic, mostly manual production method used to make metal assume a certain shape. To do this, a steel mold or gravity (“shell”), which consists of two or more parts pressed together, is filled with liquid raw material. Aluminum, for example, can be used for gravity casting, or cast iron, for example. After the metal cools, it takes the shape of the gravity and the gravity is opened to eject the finished product.
This is how Gravity casting works in 5 steps:
Pattern making. First, a pattern is made that has exactly the same shape as the metal end product will later need to have. The pattern can be made from a variety of materials, such as wax.
Coquille creation. Ceramic is sprinkled over the pattern, in several layers. The ceramic layer adheres to the pattern, forming a shell for the pattern. This shell is the Gravity. Once this layer has dried and hardened, the mold for the casting process is ready.
Removing the pattern from the Gravity. Inside the gravity is still the pattern. To use the gravity, this pattern must be removed. This is done, for example, by melting it. The gravity is mounted in a casting box and is now ready to cast metal.
Casting gravity. Metal is heated and poured into the gravity in liquid form.
Cure, remove gravity and finish if necessary. When the metal has hardened, it has taken the shape of gravity. Now the gravity can be removed and the finished product emerges. If necessary, it is finished (for example, ground or polished).
Gravity casting can be used to manufacture a variety of types of products. Examples of products that can be made through coquille casting include automotive and aircraft parts and medical equipment.
