FAQ
Sand casting is a manufacturing method used to make metal parts. Heated, liquid metal is poured into a mold made of sand, which then hardens to form the final product.
Sand casting is primarily a suitable production method for larger, heavier parts and differs in this respect from injection molding, for example, which is more appropriate for making smaller, more precise products.
The sand casting process can be divided into a number of steps:
Pattern manufacturing. First, a pattern is made that has exactly the same shape as the final product is to have later. A pattern can be made of wood or plastic, for example.
Making a mold from sand based on the pattern. The pattern is placed in a container containing sand with a binding agent. Then the sand is pressed around the pattern.
Curing the mold. By adding heat or chemicals to the sand around the pattern, the sand hardens.
Removing pattern from mold. The pattern is removed from the mold. Now the mold is ready to be used.
Pouring raw material into the sand mold. The heated, liquid metal is poured into the mold.
Cooling and solidifying. The metal cools and solidifies into the shape of the sand mold.
Opening the mold. The finished metal product is removed from the mold. The mold can be reused, but not nearly as often as an injection mold, for example.
Possibly: post-processing and/or assembly. Sometimes post-processing is required to make the product ready for use, and/or it is assembled into a finished product.
Some examples of products made by sand casting process:
Parts of machines, engines and cars
Decorative elements, such as decorative cast iron fencing or lampposts
Piping components, such as elbows and couplings
