Low pressure aluminum casting, also known as low pressure die casting, is a process in which heated, liquid aluminum is injected into a pre-formed mold, takes the shape of the mold and cools into that shape, creating an aluminum product in a pre-designed shape. This can be a finished product or a semi-finished product that still needs to be assembled.
Low pressure aluminum casting follows these steps:
Mold design. A product design is converted into a mold design.
Heating aluminum. Heating aluminum makes it liquid and thus suitable for casting.
Casting the product at low pressure. The aluminum is poured into the mold under low pressure. Because of the low pressure, there is very little chance of air bubbles, for example, which makes for a strong product.
Cooling and solidification. The mold remains closed while the aluminum cools and thereby solidifies.
Ejection and possible rework and/or assembly. Once the product has cooled, the mold ejects it. Optionally, the product is reworked and/or assembled as needed.
The difference between low-pressure aluminum casting and high-pressure aluminum casting, as the name suggests, is the pressure at which the aluminum is injected into the mold or die.
The production methods also differ when considering their applications. Low pressure aluminum casting is well suited for making larger parts where it is important that the final product be as solid as possible (the low pressure ensures little unevenness in the casting process and thus strength). High pressure casting is recommended as a production method for high-speed mass production. High pressure casting is also a good choice for working very precisely and producing a final product with great detail.
Low pressure aluminum casting is a widely used method for larger parts such as parts of transportation equipment and machinery (think cars, motorcycles, trains, streetcars, buses, ships, agricultural machinery, automobiles), construction parts, medical equipment and machine parts.
