FAQ
Lost wax casting is a production method in which a wax mold is used to shape the final product. Because the wax is lost during the production process, this method is called the lost wax method. Incidentally, the wax can often be reused to make another mold.
In steps, the production process looks like this in lost wax casting:
Die design. First, a mold is made of aluminum or steel.
Wax mold making. The mold is filled with molten wax, which hardens into the final mold. This mold of wax has exactly the same shape as the final product will later have.
Wax mold making. Several wax molds are clustered: they are attached together to a so-called wax tree.
Applying ceramic layer. The wax tree with the wax molds attached to it is sprinkled with several ceramic layers, each of which is dried by heating. Eventually, a solid ceramic layer forms around each wax mold.
Melting out wax. Through heating, the wax is melted out of the ceramic shell. What remains is the ceramic sleeve. This is the mold for the final product.
Heating the ceramic molds. The ceramic molds are heated to become as strong as possible. The last wax residues now melt and a clean ceramic mold remains.
Casting of the ceramic forms. Now the final product is created by pouring the heated raw material for the final product into the ceramic mold. Different materials can be used for this. Bronze casting using the lost wax method is possible, but iron, copper or aluminum are also suitable raw materials.

Lost foam molding and lost wax molding are roughly the same production method, but in lost foam molding, the mold is made of foam instead of wax. Otherwise, the production method works the same: the foam mold serves as the mold for the ceramic coating, which in turn serves as the mold for the raw material of the final product.
The lost wax method is suitable for making finished products of various materials. For example, bronze casting can be done with the lost wax method, and cast steel, iron, brass and aluminum are also suitable materials for the lost wax method.
